After nearly two months of preparation, Riverside Mountain City photography exhibition will be grandly opened at China Cultural Center in Stockholm on August 23. The authors of the exhibition are the Wyss family and Mr. Daniel Fredholm. Riverside Mountain City Photography Exhibition juxtaposes two collections of over 30 black-and-white photographs. The first set showcases the Wyss family’s journey a century ago, travelling west along the Yangtze River to Chongqing. Their lens captured the perils of navigating the Three Gorges, the hardship echoed in ancient boat trackers’ work chants, and the earliest glimpses of riverside towns and the mountain city itself. A century later, Swedish photographer Daniel Fredholm turns his focus onto the city’s vibrant pulse: old residential buildings, bustling hotpot stalls, lively markets, and leisurely afternoons. With authenticity and insight, he captures the resilience and vitality of the people of Chongqing. During the exhibition, The Moment of Chongqing City photo exhibition will also be featured, alongside the documentary films.

About the special guests
Ramon Wyss
Mr. Ramon Wyss is the guardian and narrator of precious historical imagery. In the 1920s (approximately a century ago), his family journeyed along the Yangtze River to Chongqing. Members of the Wyss family faithfully captured with their lenses the perilous journeys through the Three Gorges of that era, the hardship endured by the ancient trackers hauling boats, and the initial appearance of the towns along the riverbanks and the mountainous city of Chongqing. Mr. Ramon Wyss now returns, bringing these long-sealed family images spanning a century. He will share the stories transcending time and space behind these evocative, historically resonant black-and-white photographs, leading the audience to look back upon those arduous journeys on the river and feel the original heartbeat of the mountain city.
Daniel Fredholm
Mr. Daniel Fredholm is a Swedish photographer with a long-standing focus on China’s social transformations. Echoing the Wyss family of a century ago, he trains his lens on contemporary Chongqing – this vibrant mountain city. Mr. Fredholm’s photographic perspective is grounded yet perceptive, delving into the city’s fabric to capture the lived-in feel of old residential buildings and the authentic moments of daily life revealed by its citizens during leisurely afternoons. His work meticulously portrays the unique resilience, optimism, and vitality of Chongqing’s people amidst the city’s rapid modernization. Mr. Fredholm will share contemporary stories of the mountain city, filled with warmth and dynamism as seen through his eyes, creating a century-spanning dialogue with the historical imagery from a hundred years prior.
