On August 30th and 31st, Stockholm Open Weiqi Tournament 2025, jointly organized by China Cultural Center in Stockholm and Stockholm Go Club, was successfully concluded at China Cultural Center in Stockholm. This event, which brought together Weiqi lovers from Northern Europe, has become an important bridge for promoting cultural exchange between China and Sweden. This year’s open tournament attracted numerous players from Sweden, China, Finland, Turkey, Romania, and other countries. It was a 5 round McMahon tournament with Chinese rules, ensuring that each participant could compete against opponents of similar skill levels.

At the venue, players were deeply focused, contemplating their moves or making decisive placements, engaging in a battle of wits on the board. Otilla Tarita-Cimpeanu, a player from Romania, shared: “This was my first time participating in Stockholm Open Weiqi Tournament. Not only did I experience a high-quality tournament, but I also met many like-minded friends. The atmosphere of building friendships through the game was truly memorable.”

Inside the playing hall, competitors concentrated calmly and moved their pieces swiftly. Outside, cultural exchanges unfolded naturally. Building on the success of previous years, an experiential zone titled “Weiqi and Chinese Culture” was set up, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in traditional Chinese culture while watching the matches.

Mr. Qin’s family from China Starlight Weiqi Club, who were traveling in Stockholm, learned about Stockholm Open Weiqi Tournament 2025. Eager to engage with European Weiqi lovers, they registered for the tournament and expressed: “Weiqi, as an important part of traditional Chinese culture, is gaining renewed vitality around the world. We are delighted to see so many Weiqi lovers from European countries gathering in Stockholm, enhancing mutual understanding and friendship through the game. We believe in building friendships through Weiqi and promoting Chinese culture globally.”

The success of the event was also made possible by the full support and dedicated efforts of Stockholm Go Club. The club made significant contributions in areas such as event organization, player recruitment, and logistical support, while also providing a platform for exchange and growth for the entire Weiqi community. Charlie, one of the representatives of Stockholm Go Club, expressed his affection for Chinese Weiqi and his hopes for the future development of the game in Sweden.

After the matches concluded, players did not leave immediately but gathered in small groups to review and discuss their games. These moments silently affirmed the true essence of Weiqi—where beyond winning and losing, friendship and understanding prevail.

Next autumn, we look forward to seeing you again at Stockholm Open Weiqi Tournament 2026!
