Introduction to Jianmen Pass: The Threefold Value of a Natural Fortress

  • Geographic Wonder: A Natural Eastern Barrier

Jianmen Pass is located in Jiange County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, China. As a naturally-formed perilous mountain pass, it constitutes a spectacular blend of geology and human culture. Nestled among the peaks of the Longmen Mountains branch range and surrounded by 72 peaks, only a narrow passage winds its way through it. Since ancient times, it has enjoyed the reputation of “One man guarding the pass can hold off ten thousand”.This unique landform has made it a natural military fortress, whose strategic significance is comparable to that of the Strait of Gibraltar in European history, serving as an insurmountable barrier protecting the Sichuan Basin.

  • Historical Context: A Corridor of Civilization Spanning Millennia

Officially established as a strategic pass, Jianmen Pass boasts a military and cultural heritage stretching over 1,700 years. It serves as a core section of the ancient Shu Road and a vital transportation artery linking northern China with the southwest region.During the Warring States Period, it witnessed the ancient myth of “the Five Strong Men Blazing a Trail through Mountains”. In the Three Kingdoms Period, it evolved into a pivotal battlefield that shaped the fate of the nation, where countless heroes and gallants fought valiantly. For thousands of years, it has been not only a vital military stronghold but also a bridge for cultural exchanges, shouldering the mission of facilitating cross-regional cultural integration across mountains and rivers.

  • Cultural & Tourism Landmark: A Dual Monument of Nature and Humanity

As a top-tier scenic area boasting both cultural and natural heritage in China, Jianmen Pass stands as an iconic symbol of Sichuan’s cultural legacy, seamlessly blending magnificent natural scenery with profound historical deposits.Famed landscapes such as “Cliffside Sunset Glow”, “Ape’s Path” and “Bird’s Path” have long attracted literati and poets throughout the ages, who left behind countless timeless works eulogizing its grandeur — among them is Li Bai’s masterpiece “The Hard Road to Shu”.Today, Jianmen Pass resembles a living museum of Chinese military culture and ancient engineering, allowing visitors to connect with the very soul of China’s historical landscapes.

Introduction to Jiang Wei:
A Legend of Loyalty and Righteousness in the Three Kingdoms Era

Jiang Wei (202–264 AD), courtesy name Boyue, was a legendary military general of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. Born in what is now Gansu Province, he was discovered and held in high esteem by Zhuge Liang, the renowned strategist, who imparted all his military strategies to him and entrusted him with important missions. After Zhuge Liang’s death, Jiang Wei inherited his mentor’s lifelong ambition of “restoring the Han Dynasty” and led the Shu Han army to launch nine northern expeditions against the Cao Wei regime. Even after the fall of Shu Han, he never abandoned his ideals, demonstrating extraordinary courage and resourcefulness. Although his final plan ended in failure and he sacrificed his life for his country, his loyalty, righteousness and perseverance have become an eternal symbol of unwavering faith in Chinese culture, comparable to Hector in Western epics.

In this experience, you will no longer be a mere spectator. You will stand atop the cliffs of Jianmen Pass, listening to the wind roar like rolling war drums.
