Streams and rivers – Artistic experiences from different times and spaces will converge and flow at the China Cultural Center in Stockholm. Ten Chinese and Swedish artists will present works that tell the stories of their encounters and exchanges. Their creative journeys have intersected and collided across different times and spaces over the years, and now, for the first time, they come together under one roof.

The sculptures in the exhibition are a group of sculptors based in Stockholm, share a deep connection to stone. They have exhibited together and worked at Stengården with Sam Westerholm in Nynäshamn, near Stora Vika—a site where beautiful Carrara-like marble has been quarried for decades. Besides marble, sculptures are carved out in alabaster, limestone, diabas, soapstone from Norway, Swedish quartzite and granite and many more, working outside using hand tools and pneumatic hammer.

Meanwhile, a parallel flow runs through Uttersberg, where Zhang Fangbai and Eva Zettervall have both lived and worked. There, beyond Galleri Astley and its museum, lie workshops for graphics and frame making as well as artist residences—spaces that nurture artistic exchange. Eva has also taught at the School of Fine Arts of East China Normal University in Shanghai, where Zhang Fangbai is professor, continuing the intercultural dialogue, forging a deep friendship with him.

In this exhibition, the community of artists and friends jointly tell the stories of life and time. Ink, oil paint, and stone meet, as different materials and artistic styles converge into a river of art, creating a space where the material and the transcendent engage in a dialogue between carving and depiction.
