Imaginära Landskap – Måleri och Skulptur exhibition will grandly open on April 24 at China Cultural Center in Stockholm. The exhibition brings together paintings and sculptures by Chinese artist Wang Hui and Swedish artists Olof Bendz, Håkan Bull, Ricardo Donoso, and Eleonor Ryding. Through their respective cultural perspectives and artistic languages, they explore the multiple possibilities of “landscape” as an inner reflection, a bearer of cultural memory, and an emotional vessel. You are warmly invited to step into this landscape world co-constructed by imagination and perception.

Does a landscape have to refer to the concept of land?
Chilean abstract expressionist Roberto Matta coined the term “inscape” for abstract paintings in which he explored the psychoanalytic landscape of the human mind. Matta’s “inscapes” included the human mind’s space of thought within the concept of “land”. His work blended abstraction with surrealism and wildly expanded the concept of what a landscape could be.

These landscapes emphasize atmosphere, metaphors and inner worlds rather than realistic depictions and range from pure abstraction to mythological scenes. “Imaginary landscapes” refer to fictional, conceptual artistic interpretations of nature rather than exact depictions. This process often focuses on atmosphere, light, color and inner experiences of a subject.

Landscape painting says something about how we see and have seen the world. It tells the story of the relationship of art and man with what we call nature.
