中国皮影戏是中国重要的民间传统艺术，是一种以皮制或纸制的彩色影偶形象，伴随音乐和演唱进行表演的戏剧形式。皮影戏艺人皆身怀绝技，他们可以表演几十部传统剧目，可即兴演唱，可真假声转换，也可一人同时操纵数个影偶，还能够演奏不同乐器。许多皮影艺人还会雕刻皮影，人们先将牛皮或羊皮加工成半透明状后再刻制上彩，其雕绘工艺刀工精致、造型逼真。

浙江省海宁市境内，至今流传着具有南宋风格的海宁皮影戏。海宁皮影戏已有近千年历史，曲调高亢、激昂，却也能宛转幽雅，配以笛子、唢呐、二胡等乐器，节奏明快悠扬，极富水乡韵味，是民间婚嫁、寿庆、祈神等场合的常演节目。
