On February 9, 2026, the event “China’s Stories” – An Introduction to Chinese Classical Dance” was successfully held at China Cultural Center in Stockholm, offering Nordic audiences an insightful interpretation of the rhythms embedded in traditional Chinese culture.

The event opened with a speech by Jin Dong, Head of China Coal Mine Art Troupe and National Class-A Actor. Director Jin Dong noted that this trip to Northern Europe marked his first visit, and Rhythms of the East is a refined traditional Chinese classical dance production specially created for the “2026 Happy Chinese New Year” celebrations. He expressed his hope that the Swedish audience would experience the charm of traditional Chinese dance and the spirit of Chinese culture conveyed through the performance. Jin Dong also extended his gratitude to China Cultural Center in Stockholm for their efforts in facilitating the Sweden tour of China Coal Mine Art Troupe and conveyed New Year greetings to the audience present.

The guide for this appreciation session—Zhou Wencai, a young choreographer from China Coal Mine Art Troupe—led the audience into the enchanting world of Chinese classical dance with exceptional expertise and engaging delivery. Director Zhou explained, “The ‘body rhythm (Shenyun)’ of Chinese classical dance is the fusion of breath and movement. Every instance of lifting, sinking, thrusting, and leaning embodies the ancient wisdom of yin-yang balance.” Clips of classic works were displayed on the screen, and the audience watched with rapt attention, as if they could sense the vital essence of the millennia-old Han and Tang dynasties flowing through the air.

The lecture delved deeply into the profound connection between dance and traditional Chinese medicine philosophy: ” ‘Sinking Qi to the Dantian’ is not only a key principle in dance but also the core of TCM health preservation. The ‘circularity’ and ‘curves’ in classical dance correspond to the concept of meridian circulation in the human body.”

“Hand gestures from different dynasties are not only beautiful forms but also a language of emotion,” Director Zhou said as he personally demonstrated, his slender fingers seemingly painting an invisible landscape in the air. Swedish audience members eagerly followed along, discovering that subtle variations in fingertip angles could convey different emotions. Under Director Zhou’s patient guidance, over a hundred Swedish participants systematically learned the evolution of the “fist-and-palm salute” (gongshou li) from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty.

“The highest pursuit of Chinese art is ‘conveying spirit,’ and the same is true for dance,” Director Zhou explained. By comparing excerpts from different repertoires and the interpretations of several dancers, he elucidated how to express complex emotional layers such as joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness through the coordination of gaze, breath, and movement.

A local Swedish dance studio also expressed their love for Chinese dance and their welcome to China Coal Mine Art Troupe.
